Sending a strong message on Russia-Ukraine war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that India is “not neutral”. The PM reiterated India’s stand on peace during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. He also appreciated Trump’s efforts to bring an end to the war.

“India is not neutral. India is siding with peace. I have already said to President Putin that this is not the era of war. I support the efforts taken by President Trump,” PM Modi said.

The prime minister’s remarks came a day after Trump held separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. The call came as as Trump makes clear to his advisers he wants to bring the Ukraine conflict to a swift end.

Donald Trump’s predecessor, President Joe Biden, hadn’t spoken to his Russian counterpart in nearly three years, believing there was little to be gained in speaking to a leader he’d deemed a war criminal.

Modi arrived at the White House to hold wide-ranging talks with Trump amid expectations of a raft of specific outcomes including firming up of a new defence framework and boosting cooperation in areas of trade, energy and critical technology.

Ahead of his meeting with Modi, the American President announced a new reciprocal tariff policy for all the trading partners of the US, a move that could have some impact on India’s trade with the US as well.

Before meeting Trump, the Indian prime minister held separate talks with US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, billionaire Elon Musk and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy.

Modi kicked off his two-day visit to Washington DC on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning India time) after concluding his trip to France.
