A man has been shot in the neck by an apparent stranger following a night of chaos in Sydney’s west, with the shooter reportedly turning the gun on himself.

Police say the violence began when the man fired several shots into a home on Antwerp Street in Auburn just before 10pm on Tuesday.

Neighbours told Daily Mail Australia they heard shouting between a man and a woman at the home just moments before bullets were fired.

After fleeing the scene, the man encountered a 55-year-old man sitting in his car on nearby Mona Street and attempted to enter the vehicle.

The man shot the driver in the neck, who police believe was innocent.

‘Police have been told the 55-year-old was confronted by an unknown man who then fired a shot at the car, striking him in his neck,’ NSW Police said.

The gunman reportedly fled to the banks of Duck Creek where he turned the gun on himself.

Officers discovered his body in thick bushland off Mona Street just before 2.15am during a search of the area.

A firearm was also found and seized for evidence.

‘While the investigation is ongoing, the man’s death isn’t being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Coroner,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

‘There is no ongoing risk to the public.’

The man injured in his car was rushed to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a serious condition on Wednesday morning.

Police believe the domestic incident, random shooting and apparent suicide are linked and have made a public appeal for information.

Officers established crime scenes at Antwerp and Mona Street on Tuesday night.

The glass window at the front of the home on Antwerp Street has been almost completely shattered by the bullets fired.

The shootings came just hours after a man’s body was discovered in a unit block in Cabramatta at about 9.45pm following a report of concern for welfare.

The man is yet to be formally identified as an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
