An Australian professional surfer, who lost his leg in an attack with a great white shark, has shared video of his recovery online, appearing to show himself practising popping up on a pretend surf board.
Kai McKenzie, 23, took to Instagram to show his followers how he has been recovering just a few months on from the horrifying incident.
The surfer was set upon by a three-metre-long shark at North Shore Beach in Port Macquarie back in July. McKenzie had fought off the shark and managed to catch a wave back to shore.
He would later reveal that a police officer had saved his life, after the officer, who was walking his dog, rushed to his aid, before wrapping a makeshift tourniquet from his dog’s lead around the upper part of his injured leg.
The move would stop McKenzie from dying of blood loss after his leg had been torn off by the shark.
The surfer is now determined to get back into the water despite the harrowing ordeal and has posted several clips of himself on his Instagram.

McKenzie was also seen practising walking with a prosthetic leg, as he continues his recovery

Recalling the attack, Mr McKenzie (pictured) remembered repeatedly trying to kick the shark away before finally catching a wave to shore where a police officer raced to help him
In the clips, he is seen pretending to pop up on a surfboard before practising walking with a prosthetic leg while supporting himself between two metal railings.
The surfer captioned the clip with a ‘devil face’ emoji.
He had previously issued a message to his followers on social media that he’d be back out riding waves soon.
‘Looking forward to the day I get back to here, I’m gonna push everything I have to get there, I know it’s gonna be a long journey but it’s going to happen and all your support has fired me up. So let’s get it,’ he wrote.
McKenzie has also spoken out on the moment that the police officer saw him on the beach.
‘He came and saw me at the hospital and it was huge. I would 100 per cent not be here if it wasn’t for him,’ Mr McKenzie told surfing magazine Stab last week.
‘Thank f*** he had a dog lead.’
He revealed he had also spoken to fellow surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003.

McKenzie (pictured recently with his girlfriend, Eve) spent two months recovering in hospital after he was mauled by a shark in July
‘She was on holiday and she just said to me: “You don’t know what you can do. There hasn’t been anyone who’s lost a leg that can surf like you”.
‘She just gave me a rundown of the reality of it and changed my whole perspective to stay positive,’ Mr McKenzie said.
