The 68th edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held tonight to crown the best male and female football players of the 2023-24 season. France Football awards this prestigious award annually, recognising individual brilliance on the football pitch over a year. Ever since its introduction in 1956, the Ballon d’Or has turned out to be one of the most coveted prizes in football. English football icon Sir Stanley Matthews was the first-ever winner of the award.
Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior appears to be the favourite to win the men’s award while Barcelona Femini’s Aitana Bonmati is the favourite to seal a second consecutive women’s crown.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony also marks the beginning of a new era with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo not making it into the 30-man shortlist this year. It ends the decades-long dominance of the two football icons that saw them win the award 13 times in the last 16 years.
The 68th edition of the ceremony will feature multiple different awards apart from the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or. The Yashin Trophy will be presented to the best goalkeeper. The Kopa Trophy will be given to the best player under 21 years (as of July 31, 2024). Men’s and women’s Coach of the Year awards will also be presented. The best men’s and women’s football clubs will also be given prizes. The top scorer in the previous season will receive the Gerd Muller Trophy.
The Ballon d’Or crown is awarded on three main criteria.
The first includes individual performances, alongside decisive and impressive character. The second one involves team performances and achievements. The nominees are also judged on their class and fair play. An international jury of specialised journalists with one representative per country cast their votes to decide the rightful winner of the award.
