No one from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) entered into Indian territory in Assam to stop construction of a temple, a top BSF official has said. The officer, while noting that no such incident had taken place, added that the neighbouring country’s force “will not dare to commit such a grave mistake”.
The incident dates back to Thursday afternoon when there were reports that a team of BGB troops deployed at Jakiganj point in Sylhet division of Bangladesh entered into the Indian side and tried to stop the workers repairing the temple.
Explaining the situation, a top-level BSF official said the temple is located on the bank of the Kushiyara River in Assam’s Sribhumi district and approximately 120 yards away from International Border.
“On December 5, 2024, at around 1pm, Commanding Officer of 19 BGB shared a photograph with BSF CO 16 Battalion of a blue screen and informed that some defence work is going under cover of the screen which is within 150 yards of the IB. CO BSF verified and informed that repair and maintenance of an old temple was in progress,” the BSF official told News18.
Later, the screen was removed to show that no defence work was going on, following which the BGB CO did not protest.
“In the evening at around 4pm, on the request of BGB, a commander-level flag meeting was held in the midstream of the river and the issue was raised by them. They were informed about the facts and the matter was settled,” the official said.
For now, the construction work is continuing, with no protest from BGB.
