Russia urged caution with “nuclear rhetoric” on Monday after US President Donald Trump deployed two nuclear submarines near the country following a spat with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“Russia is very attentive to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation. And we believe that everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.
This came after Trump announced he had ordered two US nuclear submarines to be deployed to undisclosed “appropriate regions”, after Medvedev’s “highly provocative” comments. He did not say whether he meant nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines, neither did he reveal the location.
“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions. Just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” he said on Truth Social.

The feud boiled over after Donald Trump gave Ukraine a drastically shortened ceasefire deadline, slashing the window from 50 days to just under two weeks. Medvedev warned that such ultimatums were drawing the US closer to full-scale war.
He also criticised Trump for pressuring Russia into a ceasefire with Ukraine, accusing him of “playing the ultimatum game” and said that Trump “should remember” that Russia was a formidable force.
“As for the talk about the ‘dead economies’ of India and Russia, and ‘entering dangerous territory’ – maybe he should recall his favorite movies about ‘the walking dead,’ and also remember how dangerous the so-called ‘Dead Hand,’ which doesn’t even exist, could be,” Medvedev wrote.
The “Dead Hand” is a semi-automated Soviet-era system designed to ensure nuclear retaliation even if the Russian leadership were wiped out in a first strike.
Medvedev, who served one term as president from 2008 to 2012, is currently the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
