IPL 2025 is set to resume with the match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, May 16. The excitement and hype have been built up nicely after a couple of weeks of anxiety and anger in the nation in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing cross-border operations by the Indian army in Pakistan.
This is almost the perfect match-up to help fans find some joy in cricket. RCB and KKR share a big rivalry, right from the days of Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy at the Eden Gardens. Last year, KKR beat RCB both home and away on their way to seal the title. In 2025, RCB started their campaign by beating Ajinkya Rahane’s team in Kolkata and will now want to complete the revenge for last year.
A win can also help them seal a spot in the playoffs, which would be the sweetest icing on the cake. However, it’s never as simple as that in the IPL and Indian cricket: the weather forecast for match day isn’t great, and rain can play a role in affecting the length and nature of the contest.
Bengaluru weather forecast for Saturday, May 17
According to Accuweather.com, Bengaluru is expected to see thunderstorms from 5 pm on match day, which is just two hours before the toss, till 8 pm. Although the storm is predicted to subside in time for the second innings, the precipitation level will remain at least 34% by 11 pm.
A caveat needs to be issued here: Bengaluru weather has always been quite unpredictable and susceptible to last-minute changes for the better or worse. One positive thing, though, is that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has one of the best drainage systems in the country, which ensures that as soon as it stops raining, the ground becomes ready for play within minutes.
That’s one of the reasons why RCB’s match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) earlier in the season wasn’t washed out and the teams were able to squeeze in a five-over game. KKR would hope for something similar for they can’t afford losing one point in the event of a no-result because that’ll eliminate them from the playoffs race.
