In what might come as a major boost for the Lucknow Super Giants, star India pacer Avesh Khan has finally been cleared to join the squad after a long injury hiatus, which has seen him out of action for the last two months, having last featured in a Ranji Trophy match in January.
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Avesh, who has been dealing with an issue in his right knee, got the green signal from BCCI medical staff this week and will soon join the Lucknow team.
Avesh hasn’t played since late January, his last India appearance was four months back in a T20I in South Africa and even missed Madhya Pradesh’s final league game of the Ranji Trophy.
According to the report, Avesh was experiencing discomfort in his right knee, which was related to his workload during the domestic season.
Avesh had been rehabilitating at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where, according to the report, he went through one of his final fitness tests on Monday.
It couldn’t be confirmed when Avesh would be linking up with the Lucknow team, but he is expected to be available for selection for their next game, their second away contest, on March 27 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the latter’s home.
Lucknow lost their first game of IPL 2025 on Monday to the Delhi Capitals in Vishakhapatnam. They have been saddled with injury problems to all their primary Indian pacers.
Mayank Yadav, who is recovering from a lumbar stress injury, picked up a toe injury, too, while India and Bengal pacer Akash Deep is yet to regain full fitness after the back injury he picked up during the Australia tour.
Lucknow assistant coach Lance Klusener has said that his injury-hit franchise has no option but to “mix and match” until it begins getting players back.
In case Avesh is available, Lucknow is expected to replace Prince Yadav with him. The Delhi left-arm pacer gave away a whopping 47 runs in his quota of four overs and the penultimate over of Delhi’s innings yielded 16 runs.
