The BJP on Monday called out West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for spreading “cheap”, “scripted”, and “desperate” propaganda targeting Delhi Police, after the force debunked her claims of “linguistic terror” in the national capital.

A day ago, Banerjee shared a video claiming that the Delhi Police beat up a child and his mother from a migrant family, who originally belonged to West Bengal’s Malda district. She claimed that this was happening because the BJP has unleashed a “regime of linguistic terror against the Bengalis”.

“Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda’s Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now ?” (sic) Banerjee said in a post on X, while posting the video.

According to the time stamp on video, which could not be verified by News18, it was shot on July 26 around 4.30 pm in Delhi’s Geeta Colony.

The Delhi Police, however, debunked Banerjee’s claims saying the Bengali-speaking woman’s whole story is “baseless”, which they said they discovered after a thorough investigation. They said the woman, identfied as Sanjanu Parveen, told them that she made the video on the “request” of her relative, who was a political worker in Malda.

The police said they used local and technical intelligence as well as CCTV footage during the probe after the Sanjanu claimed that she and her child were beaten up by four policemen in plainclothes, who also demanded Rs 25,000 from her.

“West Bengal CM posted on ‘X’ that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted by the Delhi Police. Right after receiving the information, we initiated the inquiry and discovered that the lady’s name is Sanjanu Parveen… During the interrogation, she said that on 26th July, around 10:30 pm, four policemen who were in their civil clothes came to their house and took them away to a secluded area where they beat them up and demanded Rs. 25,000 from them, which they gave them,” East Delhi DCP Abhishek Dhania told news agency ANI.

Dhaniya said the video was circulated on social media by the political worker in Malda to “tarnish” the image of the Delhi Police. He added that further investigation is on.

“Understanding the seriousness of the situation, we have formed multiple teams since last night. Based on technical and local intelligence, as well as CCTV footage, we have gathered various evidence. Based on that evidence, we found out that the whole story told by this lady is baseless… During the interrogation, she mentioned that her relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal, is a political worker, and on his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him,” he said.

He added: “Later, he circulated the video in the local media… After a thorough investigation and inquiry, we have concluded that the entire video is baseless and fabricated. This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police. Further investigation is still going on.”

WHAT DID THE BJP SAY?

Reacting to the statement by the Delhi Police, the BJP called out Banerjee for spreading propaganda against the force and the BJP, which is the ruling party at the Centre.

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar said the chief minister’s “lies have been exposed” and her claims are “fake” and “cooked up”.

“Once again Mamata Banerjee’s lies have been exposed! The entire story peddled by that woman was FAKE. Cooked up at the behest of a TMC linked handler from Malda District, West Bengal. Yet Mamata Banerjee rushed to post a baseless lie on X, targeting Delhi Police with a fabricated lie, without verifying a single fact. This is not concern for Bengalis, it’s desperate propaganda to divide & defame. This is a complete Cheap, Scripted Propaganda. How far will Mamata Banerjee stoop to protect her false narrative!” Majumdar wrote on X, while sharing the Delhi Police statement.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister launched a statewide ‘Bhasha Andolan’ (language movement) accusing the BJP and the Election Commission (EC) of conspiring to implement the National Rregister Citizens (NRC) “through the backdoor” and unleashing “linguistic terror” on Bengali-speaking migrants.

Part of her anti-BJP offensive in the run up to the 2026 assembly elections, the ‘Bengali Language Movement’ from launched from Bolpur — from Bolpur — the abode of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s Shantiniketan. She declared she will “give up her life but not her language”, and vowed to stand against attempts to erase Bengali pride, disenfranchise the poor, or drive out migrants under the guise of electoral roll revision.
