Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs on Monday moved a motion of breach of privilege against Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, and Purnea Lok Sabha MP Pappu Yadav, over their controversial remarks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the Parliament, saying that such remarks “appear to demean the stature and dignity of the President of India.”

In a letter addressed to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, the MPs said, “Such remarks not only undermine the dignity of the office but also violate the sanctity of parliamentary procedures and conventions. This is a clear manifestation of elitist and anti-tribal mindset of Sonia Gandhi who is yet to understand the struggle and sensitivity of a tribal poor.”

In a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the MPs said, “The allegations expressed by these anti-women and anti-tribal and derogatory comments portray the President as a mere puppet, lacking autonomy and dignity, which is totally baseless and unjustified. It is noteworthy that in independent India, irrespective of the party in power, the office of the President has been beyond partisan and cheap politics. As Members of Parliament, we should be the torchbearers of public conduct, decorum and ethics. Therefore, Yadav’s act is a violation of parliamentary tradition, ethics and code of conduct.”

What Sonia Gandhi Said On President Murmu’s Speech

President Murmu addressed a joint sitting of the Parliament to mark the beginning of the Budget Session after which Sonia Gandhi was asked by reporters for her comment outside the Parliament.

She said, “The President was getting very tired by the end. She could hardly speak, poor thing.”

“Boring? No comments? Repeating the same thing again and again?” she added.

Gandhi’s comments came as she tried to show her concerns for the 66-year-old president who to her appeared exhausted after delivering her long customary speech, however, the BJP criticised it and called it a “derogatory comment”.

What Pappu Yadav Said On President Murmu’s Speech

The Purnea MP had made an objectionable statement against the President and her speech saying that she just read a “love letter.”

“The President is like a stamp. She just has to read a love letter…,” Yadav was quoted as saying by ANI.

BJP Lashes Out At Congress

The BJP slammed Gandhi for her “derogatory” remark on President Murmu and said that it is the feudal mindset of the Congress which fails to digest that an Adivasi lady is the country’s president.

On Sunday, a complaint was filed against Sonia Gandhi before a court in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district for her ‘poor thing’ remark. Sudhir Ojha, a Muzaffarpur-based lawyer, filed a complaint on Saturday against Gandhi seeking registration of an FIR against her for allegedly disrespecting the country’s highest constitutional authority.

Ojha also named Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as co-accused and sought legal action against them as well.
