Bojan Bogdanovic, a 10-year veteran of the NBA, announced his retirement on Sunday at the age of 36, citing a persistent left foot injury.
“After more than two decades in the game, the moment has arrived to say goodbye to basketball,” Bogdanovic wrote. “Not just as a sport but as a part of who I am.”
In the 2022-23 season with Detroit, he averaged a career-best 21.6 points and made the playoffs seven times across five different teams.
“Every stop left a mark,” he wrote. “Every jersey carried its own weight.” He concluded, “I’m closing this chapter, but my love for the game remains. I didn’t reach the end. I’ve reached the other side of the beginning.”
Born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bogdanovic played internationally for Croatia. He started with his hometown club, signed with Real Madrid, and later joined Zagreb and Fenerbahce. He won league titles in Croatia and Turkey before making his NBA debut with Brooklyn in 2014.
In the 2016-17 season, he played 55 games for the Nets before a trade sent him to the Washington Wizards. He later joined the Indiana Pacers (2017-19), Utah Jazz (2019-22), Detroit Pistons (2022-24), and New York Knicks (2024).
Bogdanovic missed the 2024-25 season due to a foot injury. The Knicks traded him to the Nets before the 2024 season, and the Nets eventually waived him.
He underwent season-ending foot surgery in 2024 and again in February, never playing for the Nets after the return trade to Brooklyn.
“Sometimes in life, you don’t choose the moment. The moment chooses you,” Bogdanovic posted on social media.
“After 14 months of battling a foot injury, two surgeries, and countless efforts to get back on the court, the time has come to close a chapter.”
Bogdanovic averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists over 719 career NBA games. His younger brother, Bogdan Bogdanovic, is currently on the roster of the Los Angeles Clippers.
