Former England pacer Stuart Broad has said that the Indian bowlers came in afresh and knew that one lengthy spell could do it for their team, as he lauded the joint effort from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, which took India to a thrilling six-wicket win in the fifth Test at the Oval.
The Indians began their comeback when they reduced England from 301/3 to 337/6 in their run chase of 374 in the final session on Day 4.
In a conversation with Sky Sports after the game, Broad said that while many believed the early stumps on Day 4 disturbed India’s momentum, it was the opposite from a bowler’s perspective.
“The Indian bowlers freshened up and knew they had one big spell to get this. And when you are bowling for a Test win, there is no more energy inside your body than that and both bowlers were exceptional in what they did,” Broad said.
“It had everything and was a fitting finale to what has been one of the greatest Test series I’ve seen and I think a fair result,” Broad added.
“When we were walking off the ground last night at the end of Day 4, a lot of the social media were saying England will be at a big advantage with the heavy roller. However, how I thought about it from a bowler’s point of view was, ‘ I get a nice sleep and I’ll be fresher to hit this pitch hard and get more out of it,” Broad said.
Siraj starred for India with a five-for in the second innings, including three wickets on the fifth day.
Siraj was the standout performer, delivering one of his finest performances under pressure. He grabbed nine wickets in the fifth Test, which India won by six runs and finished the series with 23 wickets.
The Test series turned out to be one of the most intensely fought and drama-filled showdowns in recent times.
