Former CM and senior AAP leader Atishi accused Delhi’s newly-elected BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, of “breaking its promise” by not approving the proposal to provide Rs 2,500 per month in financial assistance to women in the national capital during its first cabinet meeting held on Thursday.

Gupta, the newly-sworn fourth women Chief Minister of Delhi, responded strongly to the criticism from the senior AAP functionary, stating that it is now the BJP’s government in the city and, as such, it will operate according to its own agenda.

Atishi, who skipped the Delhi government’s swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, said, “The BJP had promised that in the first cabinet meeting itself, they would pass the scheme in which the women of Delhi would be getting 2,500. The new CM Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers took oath. In the evening, at 7 pm, the first cabinet meeting took place. The women were expecting that scheme to be passed.”

“The first day itself BJP started breaking their promises…they did not pass the scheme…BJP has made up their mind to cheat the people,” she added.

Reacting to the AAP leader’s comment, CM Rekha Gupta said, “It’s our government; the agenda will be ours. Let us work. She doesn’t need to tell us everything; she has done what she has to while in power.”

First Cabinet Meet

Shortly after the oath-taking ceremony, CM Rekha Gupta and her council of ministers held their first meeting to outline the roadmap of initiatives and begin implementing the schemes based on the BJP’s pre-poll promises.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta announced that the Delhi government will implement the BJP-led Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the national capital.

The BJP had consistently criticised the previous AAP government for failing to implement the scheme in the national capital, preventing people from benefiting from the medical policy.

Under Ayushman Bharat, a total of Rs 10 lakh health cover will be provided to each beneficiary, with the Centre and Delhi government contributing Rs 5 lakh each.

The Chief Minister also announced that the government will present the 14 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on the performance of the previous administration during the first session of the newly-formed eighth Delhi Assembly. These CAG reports had been ‘blocked’ by the AAP when it was in power.

The BJP secured 48 seats in the recently held Delhi Assembly elections, returning to power after 27 years of drought. Meanwhile, the AAP faced a massive setback as it won just 22 seats in the 70-member Assembly.
