Makar Sankranti is marked every year in January and in 2025, it falls on January 14. The festival is commemorated with different traditions and rituals as per the geographical regions. As many are celebrating the day with their loved ones, television actress Brinda Dahal, known for her performance in the show Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, recalled her unique celebration and cherished memories of this special occasion.

Brinda, who hails from Nepal, spoke about how the festival is celebrated in the neighbouring country. She said as reported by Zee News, “Since I am from Nepal, we celebrate Makar Sankranti a little differently. It’s not a big event, but we do cook chikki and laddoos and eat meals like dahi chura, gud chura, and others. There is also an unusual ritual for kids. They block the road with ropes and stop pedestrians, demanding money. They keep a small idol of Lord Shiva and Parvati by the side and chant their praises, such as ‘Shiv Parvati ki Jai’. They will not let anyone pass till they pay some money.”

The actress further shared her experience of celebrating Makar Sankranti on the sets of her mythological show and said that it was her first time flying a kite at this festival. She continued, “It was such an amazing experience! I really enjoyed it, especially since everyone taught me how to fly a kite. Although my hands were a little painful during the procedure, it was worth it.”

Brinda added, “In the show, we also offered bhog to God and served food to Brahmins, which taught me about customs that are not common in Nepal. I also learned that this holiday goes by many names and is celebrated in diverse ways throughout different locations.”

Moreover, she also talked about the popular phrase ‘Kai Po Che’ that she learned for the first time from her co-actors. “During the shoot, my co-actors began chanting ‘Kai Po Che,’ and I became intrigued and asked what it meant. That’s when I realised it meant someone’s kite had been cut. These were all new things I learned about the festival, which I truly enjoyed,” Brinda asserted.

In Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, Brinda plays the lead role of Vaishnavi, an orphan. The show also features celebs like Sneha Wagh, Jaya Bhattacharya and Sara Khan in pivotal roles.
