He’s arguably one of Britain’s best known actors, but as far as the oblivious onlooker was concerned he was an aimless punk wondering a busy New York sidewalk on Wednesday.

Dressed in a studded leather jacket, zipped tartan trousers and sporting an enormous multicolored mohawk, the actor in question was dressed in character while shooting a new film.

Working on location in New York City, the London based star, 41, was filming scenes for director Darren Aronofsky’s forthcoming thriller, Caught Stealing.

He will star alongside Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber and Regina King in the new movie, but his own role an an edgy looking punk is yet to be clarified.

Butler, best known for his Golden Globe and BAFTA winning role as rock n’ roll pioneer Elvis Presley, was later seen on set with the British actor.

It was all a far cry from his best known roles, among them the late Duke Of Edinburgh and a certain time travelling Doctor… but can you guess who it is?

That’s right, it’s Matt Smith!

The former Doctor Who and The Crown star has shaved his head for a new role in Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, adapted from author Charlie Huston’s 2004 novel of the same name.

His role is the latest in a series of high profile parts, among them Daemon Targaryen in Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon and forthcoming Sky series The Death Of Bunny Munro, in which he takes the titular lead.

The actor was announced as leading man in the Sky’s TV adaptation of singer and author Nick Cave’s 2009 novel in November 2023.

Cave will serve as an executive producer in the six-part series, which is written by BAFTA Pete Jackson and directed by Isabella Eklöf.

The story follows self-professed lothario Bunny Munro and his young son called Bunny Junior as they make an increasingly out-of-control road trip across the south of England.

The two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.

As Bunny bounces from one sales pitch to the next, trying to seduce any woman he meets, Bunny Junior tries to talk to the ghost of his mother and distract himself from the realisation his dad’s life is crumbling around him

As he starts to unravel, Bunny realises he must do something to rescue his son from his own outdated notions of what it is to be a man.

Smith said: ‘To work alongside Nick Cave on The Death of Bunny Munro feels like a great honour. It’s a brilliant exploration of love, grief, and chaos.

‘At its heart a deep, difficult, and tender story about a father and son, coping with loss and change.

‘Clerkenwell Films and Sky feels like the perfect home to make such a bold story and Pete has delivered such wonderful scripts, both funny and heart breaking in equal measure.

‘I can’t wait to collaborate with Isabella and begin the journey with everyone at Clerkenwell.’
