In what has come as a major blow to star India pacer Mohammed Shami, he has been asked by the Calcutta High Court to provide a huge alimony sum to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, every month for maintenance. Shami and Hasin have been embroiled in legal controversies for years now.
Besides that, Shami will also need to pay a certain maintenance fee every month for his daughter Aaira. The Calcutta HC has ordered Shami to pay a whopping Rs 4 lakh per month as alimony.
Justice Ajay Mukherjee issued the aforementioned order in response to a petition filed by Jahan.
Why Does Shami Need To Pay Hasin Jahan?
Shami has been asked to pay Rs 1.5 lakh every month for the latter’s expenses and Rs 2.5 lakh for the maintenance of Aaira, amounting to a total of Rs 4 lakh every month in alimony.
Seven years back, Jahan demanded Rs 7 lakh from Shami as alimony. Back then, her plea was rejected, saying that she earns her money through modelling.
Jahan continued her fight by challenging that order. The Alipore Court had initially ordered Shami to pay Rs 80000 every month for his wife and child.
The district judge later modified the order and asked Shami to pay Rs 50000 every month for his wife and Rs 80000 for his child.
But Jahan challenged the Rs 1.3 lakh alimony order and approached the Calcutta HC. She claimed that her expenses are around Rs 6.5 lakh every month.
Jahan said that Shami’s income is around Rs 7.5 crore annually, but despite having the financial means, the latter isn’t providing the necessary money for his wife and child. The Calcutta HC thus issued the Rs 4 lakh order considering Shami’s income.
Shami played the Champions Trophy and some matches of the Indian Premier League, but his last Test was the World Test Championship final two years back.
Since then, Shami has played just one first-class game, in November.
“We’ve sort of been trying to get him fit for the series, of course, but he’s had a little bit of a setback over the last week or so. He’s got some MRIs done. I don’t think he was going to be able to play five Tests and at the moment, I don’t think his workload is where it needs to be,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in May.
