Cameron Bancroft opens up on the ‘trauma’ of his horror Big Bash League collision with Daniel Sams – as WA star is handed Gloucestershire captaincy

  • Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams BBL season came to a premature ending
  • They were involved in a horror collision in January while playing for the Thunder

Cameron Bancroft has claimed he has had to work through some ‘trauma’ following his horror collision with team-mate Daniel Sams during the Big Bash League last month.

Bancroft hasn’t played cricket since January 3, after the Sydney Thunder opener collided with Sams as the pair attempted to take a catch during their side’s dramatic final-ball victory against the Perth Scorchers.

Both players spent the night in hospital, with Bancroft suffering a broken shoulder and a broken nose following the sickening clash.

Both players were set to be sidelined for at least 12 days having also suffered concussions and went on to miss the remainder of the BBL season. Thunder would ultimately go on to be defeated in the final by the Hurricanes.

Bancroft, meanwhile, has been named Gloucestershire’s red-ball captain for the upcoming County Championship season and is gunning for a return to action ahead of the English cricket swing.

‘Shoulder is tracking alright, obviously a little bit of trauma there to kind of deal with and manage, but I’ve been recovering pretty well,’ he told Gloucestershire’s website.

‘It’s really new for me actually, being injured and missing cricket, so definitely learning some things that I have seen a lot of other players experience.

‘It takes time for the body to heal and to get back to that sort of function, but I’m getting really close and I’m looking forward to playing some cricket at the start of March. It’s exciting.’

The Western Australia wicketkeeper has enjoyed a great year across all formats and rose to become Gloucestershire’s leading run-scorer during the 2024 Vitality Blast campaign with 534 runs.

And keen to make it back in time for the start of the Championship season in April, Bancroft said he was doing all he could to get back to his best.

‘I’ll be doing everything in my power to get there for the beginning of the season, obviously down in Australia at the moment with WA, we have still got a bit to play for here in this season,’ Bancroft said.

‘I guess I will keep my focus here and playing well and hopefully having some success there, but I will absolutely be trying to get over there and be there for game one, so we will see how we go.’

On receiving the Gloucestershire captaincy he said: ‘I’m really looking forward to this summer. It was a real honour when Mark asked me. Graeme has led this group fantastically over the years, and he has built a strong foundation. My role now is to see what I can bring as a leader—building on what he’s already delivered.

‘We would have liked to perform better last season, but there were still plenty of positives. If we build on those learnings we’ll be in a great position for the season ahead.’
