A social media post claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has banned writing cheques in black ink has left netizens baffled. The post has sparked widespread speculation, with many questioning the reason behind such a move. However, this claim is entirely false.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), through its Fact Check account on social media platform X, debunked the rumours. The PIB clarified, “It is being claimed on social media that the Reserve Bank has issued instructions banning the writing of cheques in black ink. This claim is completely false. The RBI has not issued any such guidelines regarding a specific ink colour for writing cheques.”

The PIB’s statement brought relief to customers, urging them to rely on official sources for accurate information. The public has been advised to be cautious of fake news circulating on social media.

What Does The RBI Say About Writing Cheques?

According to the Reserve Bank’s Cheque Truncation System (CTS), customers are encouraged to use image-friendly and permanent ink while writing cheques to ensure legibility and prevent tampering. However, the RBI has not issued any rules mandating or prohibiting specific ink colours for cheques.

The RBI has also reiterated that no changes or corrections can be made to critical cheque details such as the name of the payee or the amount (in numbers or words). If any changes are required, a new cheque must be issued. This measure aims to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of cheque transactions.

What Is A Cheque?

A cheque is a negotiable instrument or a transferable document used in banking. According to the HDFC Bank website, a cheque instructs the bank to pay a specific amount to the individual named on the cheque. It serves as a secure method for transactions and payments.

The PIB has urged the public to be vigilant against fake information and to rely on official government sources for updates. The recent rumour is a reminder to verify facts before believing or sharing information online.
