Diabetes is gradually becoming an epidemic, with millions across the country struggling with the disease. There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2. While both types are serious, Type 2 diabetes is somewhat easier to manage. With necessary lifestyle and dietary modifications, Type 2 diabetes can be controlled to a great extent.

Many people, upon controlling their diabetes, cease taking medication. Consequently, they believe their diabetes has been reversed.

Speaking to News18, Dr. Paras Agarwal, Director of the Diabetes and Obesity Department at Marengo Asia Healthcare Hospital, stated that Type 2 diabetes can be controlled through a healthier lifestyle, incorporating a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

The doctor said that adopting the right lifestyle, particularly within the first two years of diagnosis, can lead to diabetes remission. Remission signifies that a patient can manage their diabetes without medication. However, if lifestyle and diet are neglected, diabetes can re-emerge. Therefore, it is inaccurate to label remission as a reversal. Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that diabetes can be reversed; however, remission is certainly achievable, he added.

Bhopal’s clinical nutritionist and lifestyle coach, Anoop Gupta said that diabetes is a lifestyle-related disease, requiring lifestyle modifications for control without medication. Many individuals do not adopt the correct treatment methods, making it challenging to regulate sugar levels.

Five ways to achieve diabetes remission

Five key factors are crucial for diabetes remission. Adhering to these tips can potentially eliminate medication dependency for diabetes patients and lead to significant health improvements. To control diabetes, focus on physical health, mental well-being, emotional health, quality sleep, and improved digestion.

  1. According to lifestyle coach Anup Gupta, many diabetic patients focus on only one or two aspects of their condition. People often neglect stress reduction, which is critical for managing diabetes. Stress can elevate blood sugar levels, making stress management essential. A survey revealed that over 70% of the country’s population reports experiencing significant stress. Diabetic individuals can mitigate stress through counselling, meditation, or yoga. These practices can significantly contribute to controlling blood sugar levels without relying solely on medication.
  2. If one fails to achieve seven to nine hours of deep sleep daily, their blood sugar levels can be adversely affected. Using electronic devices such as mobile phones and televisions late into the night disrupts the body’s natural circadian rhythm. This sleep deprivation then disturbs the balance of hunger-regulating hormones, leading to increased blood sugar levels. Therefore, prioritising sufficient sleep every night is crucial for maintaining good health.
  3. Ayurveda identifies a poorly functioning digestive system as a primary factor in over 80% of diseases. Our intestines house billions of beneficial bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which produce numerous chemicals essential for maintaining good health. However, irregular routines and the consumption of junk food often lead to a lack of fibre in our diets. This deficiency can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome, potentially causing various health issues, including high blood sugar. To ensure a healthy digestive system, prioritising fibre-rich foods and avoiding junk food is crucial.
  4. Controlling blood sugar levels is crucial for managing diabetes, and understanding what and when to eat plays a vital role. Many individuals with diabetes, despite consuming home-cooked meals, experience elevated sugar levels. A key factor contributing to this is eating late at night. It is recommended to have dinner before 8 pm, as late-night meals can hinder proper digestion and impact blood sugar regulation. To effectively manage diabetes, incorporating plenty of salads and fresh fruits into the diet is essential. Conversely, processed and packaged foods should be avoided.
  5. Physical activity is crucial for managing blood sugar levels without medication. Aim for 30 to 40 minutes of exercise daily. Incorporating yoga and meditation can also help reduce stress, which can positively impact blood sugar control. To pursue diabetes remission, seek guidance from a team of healthcare professionals, including a lifestyle coach, nutrition expert, dietician, and doctor.
