Social media platform X was flooded with fans either making fun of or sympathizing with the Delhi Capitals, as they lost their third-consecutive final in the Women’s Premier League on Saturday. Innagural champions Mumbai Indians beat them by eight runs in a last-over thriller at the Braboune Stadium on Saturday to seal their second title, becoming the first team to do so.

It was a familiar story for Meg Lanning’s Capitals. They reached the final as one of the best teams in the season, also beating Mumbai twice in the group stage. But in the summit clash, Mumbai’s pedigree under pressure stood out as Harmanpreer Kaur and Co. defended a sub-par target of 150 with aplomb.

Kaur was instrumental in the win with her 44-ball 66 in the first innings. For the Capitals, Marizanne Kapp fought with a well-made 40 (26) but three wickets for the brilliant Nat Sciver-Brunt and two more for Amelia Kerr never let the match get away from Mumbai.

The Capitals lost to Harmanpreet and Co. in the 2022 final, too, and then to Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year. This one might be the most difficult to swallow and it showed in the reactions from WPL fans. Check some of them here:

“We have had another good season and unfortunately we couldn’t get over the line and congrats to Mumbai – you have been excellent through the season,” Lanning said after the match, as quoted by Cricbuzz. “Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us, one more partnership could have been enough but proud of the team. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, performing on the night is important and Mumbai were too good tonight. We haven’t been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing but that’s cricket. It has just not happened for us. We are bitterly disappointed, we put ourselves in a good position but couldn’t finish it off,” she added.
