India’s Test captain Shubman Gill and top-order batter KL Rahul scored half-centuries on Day 1 of the intra-squad match taking place in Beckenham. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to X on Friday (June 13) evening to share a tweet in which it confirmed the news of super batting shows by Gill and KL.

The intra-squad match is being played behind closed doors, and thus no live streaming/telecast is available of the match.

As part of their preparations for the five-match Test series against England, which is starting on June 20 in Leeds, India A faced England Lions in two unofficial Tests at the start of June, and in the second four-day match, Rahul opened the innings and scored a century as well.

The 33-year-old right-handed batter from Bengaluru, who has captained India in Tests in the past, is all set to play as an opening batter in the five-match Test series against England. Rahul opened for India in four out of five Tests against Australia as well and impressed with his batting performances.

According to the BCCI update, fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur was amongst the wickets on Friday.

1st Test from June 20

The first Test of the five-match series between India and England will be played at Leeds from June 20 to 24, and the next four matches are scheduled to take place in Birmingham (July 2-6), Lord’s (July 10-14), Manchester (July 23-27), and The Oval (July 31-August 4).

Gill, who has played 32 Tests for India, was appointed as the new Test captain on May 24, and he will make his Test captaincy debut next Friday. Gill will become the 37th player to lead India in the five-day format of the game.

India last won a Test series in England in 2007 when, under Rahul Dravid’s leadership, they got the better of England by 1-0 in the three-match series.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned to India due to a medical emergency in his family but is expected to join the team in England next week ahead of the start of the first Test at Headingley.
