Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 3: The nine-day festival of Chaitra Navratri, or Vasant Navratri, is dedicated to one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, known as Navdurga. On the third day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees offer prayers to Goddess Chandraghanta. Considered as the third manifestation of Maa Durga, Goddess Chandraghanta is revered for her power to dispel negativity and fear.
The Goddess is depicted with a crescent moon on her forehead which resembles a bell. Hence, the name Chandraghanta. She is shown with ten arms holding various weapons and is mounted on a tiger. This is symbolic of her role as a protector of devotees. She exudes calmness yet remains ever-ready to combat evil forces.

It is believed that worshipping Goddess Chandraghanta removes obstacles and fears from one’s life. Worshipping her brings a sense of courage and serenity among the devotees and worshipping her aids in attaining spiritual progress and inner balance.
Goddess Chandraghanta Puja Vidhi
Devotees take an early morning bath to start the day. Following that, they offer prayers to the Goddess. The rituals include kalash sthapana, offering flowers and bhog and others. Here’s the list of rituals people follow:
- Kalash Sthapana: Devotees place the sacred pot (kalash) which symbolises divine energy.
- Invocation of the Goddess: After the sthapana, devotees chant mantras and recite devotional songs and hymns like Durga Saptashati.
- Flowers and Bhog: People present the deity with jasmine flowers, fruits, milk, sweets and kheer.
- Aarti: After offerings are made, the devotees perform arti and along with it instruments like bells are rung to cleanse negative energies.
- Fasting and Charity: Many people observe a fast and donate food or clothes to the needy.
Auspicious Timing for Puja
The Tritiya tithi begins from 9:11 am on March 31 and will end at 5:42 am on April 1, as per Drik Panchang. Devotees can perform puja to worship Goddess Chandraghanta in the duration. However, devotees should check local timings based on their location.
Essential Items for the Ritual
- To perform the puja, devotees require an image or idol of the Goddess at the altar.
- Following this, the kalash is set up.
- Other items essential for the ritual include jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste and turmeric.
- Devotees present fruits, milk, and kheer as prasad.
- Coconut, betel leaves, incense sticks, and offering of red cloth, known as chunni, are also needed to perform the rituals.
Mantra for Goddess Chandraghanta
It is believed that reciting the following mantra for Goddess Chandraghanta brings peace and courage:
“Pindaj Pravaarudha Chandkopastr Kairyuta |
Prasadam Tanute Mahyam Chandraghanteti Vishruta ||”
The prayer translates to: I worship the goddess who is mounted on the best (of animals) living on flesh, who displays a ferocious rage and is accompanied by weapons; please extend your grace on me, O Goddess, you who are celebrated as Chandraghanta.

The day’s colour is Red, which represents strength, power, and passion. Devotees dress in red clothes and adorn their homes with red flowers to draw positive energy.
