Chaos as flights are delayed by at least two hours after major Aussie airport evacuated

Thousands of passengers have been ordered to evacuate Brisbane Airport after a security incident.

Flights departing the domestic terminal have been delayed by at least two hours on Monday night as all passengers will need to go back through the screening process.

The airport was emptied about 5.45pm with pictures showing massive lines to exit the terminal and go back through security.

It is understood the incident revolved around one metal detector which had become non-operational.

A number of passengers were then passed through security while the detector was not functioning, requiring the whole airport to undergo re-screening.

Brisbane Airport has said there is no security threat.

It also said the international terminal was not affected and apologised to travellers for the delays.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed just one metal detector had been faulty.

Thousands of passengers were ordered to evacuate from Brisbane Airport on Monday about 5.45pm and will have to undergo re-screening, with flights delayed by about two hours

‘The fault was quickly identified and there is no safety or security threat,’ he said.

‘However, it will take some time to rescreen all passengers and staff, delaying flights.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience and thank passengers for their patience and understanding.’

An estimated 10 domestic flights were delayed by a more than an hour.

The international terminal was not affected by the operation.

Hundreds of travellers filed out the terminal doors, stretching across the outdoor drop-off area.
