A fire has destroyed a nightclub on Melbourne’s iconic Chapel Street.

The blaze broke out on the top floor of The Lux Nightclub  shortly after 2.00am and has since been brought under control by firefighters.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that men wearing balaclavas were seen on the roof of the building shortly before the fire began.

Chapel Street remains closed in both directions, causing traffic disruptions in the area.

Police are investigating the incident.

The blaze at The Lux Nightclub started shortly after 2.00AM and has since been brought under control by firefighters
