The Blues continue to pursue attacking talent relentlessly this summer.
Chelsea’s roster of forwards may see another addition before their Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras on Friday, following reports of a deal with Brighton for Joao Pedro.
According to The Athletic, the Brazilian international is headed to the United States for a medical examination before joining the Chelsea squad, after a transfer deal surpassing £50 million was agreed.
The 23-year-old is expected to sign a seven-year contract and could be available for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Pedro, who transferred to Brighton from Watford for a then club-record fee of £30 million two years ago, scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the Seagulls.
However, the 23-year-old was left out of Brighton’s last two matches of the season following a training ground confrontation with teammate Jan Paul van Hecke.
Newcastle had also shown interest in Pedro, with Brighton turning down two bids from unnamed Premier League clubs before agreeing to terms of £55m plus £5m in add-ons with Chelsea.
This move follows Chelsea’s agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign English winger Jamie Gittens for £55m on Saturday, just hours before they defeated Benfica to secure a spot in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
FIFA has given clubs participating in the Club World Cup knockout phase until July 3 to register new players for the tournament.
Gittens could join Chelsea by then, as a deal worth up to €65 million ($76 million) for the 20-year-old was finalised on Saturday.
Chelsea have already signed striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr this summer.
Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will also join Chelsea after his Club World Cup campaign with Palmeiras.
Despite Chelsea seemingly stockpiling more talent, having spent around £170m on young players this summer itself, they believe there is space for all the attackers to thrive, especially in a season where they will return to the Champions League following this lucrative Club World Cup campaign.
