Coronary artery disease is known to be one of the leading and primary causes of heart attack. So, in that regard angiogram’s significance is considered of utmost importance.
An angiogram is a diagnosis process or an X-ray to check obstructions or some problems in the blood arteries. To detect issues like coronary heart disease and structural heart disease, doctors often recommend an angiogram. The X-ray images generated during an angiography are known as angiograms. Generally, an angiogram is suggested when symptoms suggest or point towards a potential problem with blood flow, like artery blockages. For those not familiar, coronary artery disease is known to be one of the leading and primary causes of heart attack. So, in that regard angiogram’s significance is considered of utmost importance.
Dr Tanmai Yermal Jain, Consultant – Cardiology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, recently emphasised the importance and need for angiography. “Persistent chest pain is one of the main indicators that might need an angiography, particularly if it spreads to the back, neck, or arms. Often referred to as angina, this pain is a sign that the heart is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood, which can be caused by coronary artery disease. Breathlessness, especially with vigorous activity, can potentially indicate cardiac problems need further investigation with an angiography,” he said in an interview with The Times of India.
Dr VS Prakash, HOD Ramaiah Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RICS) & Sr. Consultant- Interventional Cardiology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, on the other hand, said angiograms can also be needed for symptoms like leg pain and cramping during a walk. “Angiograms could also be necessary for symptoms such as leg pain or cramping when walking, which indicates peripheral artery disease. Additionally, if a patient experiences sudden numbness, weakness, or difficulty speaking, it could suggest a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), warranting an angiogram to assess blood flow to the brain,” Dr VS Prakash said, as per The Times of India.
While many attend gyms regularly and take part in frequent workouts in a bid to stay fit and fine, heart patients should not indulge in such activities as putting too much pressure and stress on the body results in a wide range of issues and problems. Some pre-existing heart diseases also can be a reason to worry in such cases.
