Igor Kirillov, the chief of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, was killed on Tuesday in a bomb blast outside a building in Moscow. He was killed along with his deputy in the explosion.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the explosive device was hidden in a scooter parked near the entrance of a residential building. The bomb was activated as Kirillov and his deputy approached the location, leading to their deaths.

“An explosive device planted in a scooter parked near the entrance of a residential building was activated on the morning of December 17 on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow,” stated the Committee, which oversees major investigations in Russia.

According to images published by Russian media, the blast shattered several windows of the building and caused severe damage to the front door.

This comes a day after Kirillov was sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court for using banned chemical weapons during Russia’s invasion of the country.
