Chrome security warning from the Indian government concerns Windows, Mac and Linux users who need to carefully go through the risks.
The Indian govt is warning millions of Chrome users about the new risk.
Chrome users on Windows and Mac have got a new security warning from the Indian government this week. The alert has been issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-IN, on June 6 which comes with a ‘high-severity’ alert to users of Google Chrome on popular platforms like Windows, macOS and Linux.
Warnings like these are not new but Chrome is popular among users, which makes it a prime target for hackers, especially if they have security issues to exploit and steal data.
Chrome Security Alert: What Is The Warning?
The security warning from CERT-In talks about issues affecting major components in Chrome that can be exploited by the hackers and target victims by making them go to websites with malicious files.
“These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Use after free in Compositing & libvpx; Inappropriate implementation in Background Fetch API, FileSystemAccess API, Messages, BFCache & Tab Strip; and Out of bounds write in V8. A remote attacker could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted web page,” the CERT-In note explains.
You don’t need any technical knowledge to understand the risks linked to the web browser which many use to browse the web, open their bank account details and even mail accounts. If the hacker is able to bypass the stringent checks and convince the user to enter a website crafted to steal their data, the consequences will be dangerous.
Chrome Security Warning: Who Is At Risk?
The security agency has highlighted the Chrome versions on Windows, macOS and Linux that can be targeted because of the issues:
- Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.55 for Linux
- Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.55/56 for Window and Mac
It also points out that hackers can look to target businesses and personal Chrome users on desktop which means nobody is safe from their prying eyes.
Chrome Security Update: Install Now
Fortunately, they have also identified issues and offered a new update to protect the users. You can also install the new Chrome update by:
- Access the menu with three dots located in the upper left corner
- Click on ‘Help’
- Click on ‘About Google Chrome
- Chrome will auto-check for updates and install for your version
Chrome has released a detailed summary of the issues and how it has managed to get to the deep end of the risks.
