The CIA on Thursday released two videos in Mandarin targeting Chinese officials. The videos encourage China to leak secrets to the US.

Two videos with different titles-“Why I Contacted CIA: To Take Control of My Fate” and “Why I Contacted CIA: For a Better Life,” Life”-were shared by CIA.

It features fictional scenes in which a senior Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official and a more junior government worker with access to classified information become disillusioned with China’s system and approach the CIA.

One of the videos shows a high-ranking official of the Chinese Communist Party who contacts the CIA after being unhappy with the government. The second video features a junior government employee with access to secret information also losing faith in the government and ending up contacting the CIA.

The videos aim to reach people inside the Chinese government who are unhappy with the system. It comes when Beijing has removed several high-level officials and military leaders, including some who were once close to President Xi Jinping.

“As I rise within the party, I watch those above me being discarded like worn-out shoes, but now I realise that my fate was just as precarious as theirs,” says the narrator in one of the videos in Mandarin Chinese. The camera then shows empty seats around the dinner table.

“My family’s fate cannot rest in their hands,” the man says before he contacts CIA.

The CIA is confident that the video will reach the intended audience.

Speaking to Reuters about the video, a CIA official said, “If it weren’t working, we wouldn’t be making more videos,” adding that Beijing remains their top priority in a “truly generational competition” between the US and China.
