Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich overcame a fiery Flamengo to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Vincent Kompany’s side will now play European champions Paris Saint-Germain, who walloped Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the last 16, in Atlanta on Saturday for a place in the semi-final of the tournament.
Early Lead for Bayern
Bayern Munich took just six minutes to strike when Joshua Kimmich’s corner was inadvertently headed into Flamengo’s net by Erick Pulgar.
Four minutes later, Dayot Upamecano won possession in Flamengo’s half and fed Harry Kane, whose deflected shot off Leo Ortiz found the bottom corner.
Flamengo looked shaken but soon regained their footing.
Luiz Araujo tested Manuel Neuer with a sharp effort, then went close again with a turn-and-shoot attempt just wide. In the 33rd minute, Araujo’s cross led to a thunderous strike from Gerson that flew past Neuer, thrilling most of the 60,914 in attendance.
But Flamengo’s momentum was short-lived. Araujo’s poor clearance fell to Leon Goretzka, who calmly struck from over 20 yards out to restore Bayern’s two-goal lead just before halftime.
In the 55th minute, a Giorgian de Arrascaeta cross hit Michael Olise’s arm, and Jorginho converted the penalty with trademark composure.
Flamengo pushed forward but lacked the cutting edge. In the 73rd minute, Kimmich slipped in Kane, who fired past Agustin Rossi with power and precision to seal Bayern’s 4-2 win.
Mistakes ‘Fatal’
Again, it was the ability to be clinical in the final third that proved to be the major difference, and Flamengo boss Luis doffed his cap to Bayern’s killer touch.
“It’s up to us to simply recognize the superiority of our opponent. They are very good, we knew that. At this level, any mistake is fatal. Those who deserved to go through got through,” he said.
