Defending champions Mexico posted a 2-0 win over Suriname at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, USA, on Thursday as a Cesar Montes brace helped the holders edge out the South Americans.
Montes turned the ball into the net with his head off a corner in the 57th minute before doubling his side’s lead six minutes later as Mexico held on for the win.

Montes, who also netted in Mexico’s opener against Dominican Republic as the holders picked up a 3-2 win, stands atop the goal-getters list with three strikes to his name in the ongoing competition alongside Costa Rica’s Manfred Ugalde.
Edson Alvarez, Raul Jimenez, and Montes had netted in El Tri’s triumph over the Dominicans in the curtain-raiser of the event in the USA.

Earlier in the day, Costa Rica edged out Dominican Republic 2-1 thanks to goals from Ugalde, who netted from the spot in the 44th minute, and Josimar Alcoser’s strike five minutes from time to overcome a one-goal deficit after Joao Urbaez put the Dominicans in front.
Mexico lead Group A with six points in two games and will take on Costa Rica on Sunday as the North American outfit looks to top the pool, while Suriname will close out their campaign against Dominican Republic.

Mexico, the most successful nation in Gold Cup history, extended their record with a ninth regional championship in the 2023 edition of the Gold Cup and will look to defend their crown on American soil this time around.
