Faisal Patel, the son of the late Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel, has triggered a political uproar with a statement praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Faisal called PM Modi and Amit Shah “great leaders” and affirmed that “the country is in safe hands”. This statement has created a tricky situation for the Congress, particularly as it comes at a time when the party and its leader, Rahul Gandhi, are aggressively attacking the government on issues such as Operation Sindoor and alleged “vote theft”.
Faisal Patel’s remarks are also being seen in light of other Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, who have recently diverged from the party line on a few occasions. He went on to name other prominent ministers, stating, “Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji, Nitin Gadkari ji, S Jaishankar are all solid leaders.”
The significance of Faisal Patel’s statement is magnified by the legacy of his father. Ahmed Patel was not just a leader but was revered as a trusted strategist and “troubleshooter” for the Congress high command. Often referred to as Sonia Gandhi’s “right hand”, he was a quiet yet influential player in Delhi politics, and no major party decision, from organisational reshuffles to electoral ticket distribution, was made without his counsel. His robust network and strategic acumen made him one of the most effective behind-the-scenes figures in the party.
