An ugly altercation between Harry Maguire and Cristian Romero marked the dying moments of the Europa League final played in Spain between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United on Thursday, May 22. As the Spurs recorded a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils to win their first trophy in 17 years, a fiery spat between Maguire and Romero caught the fans’ attention.
The incident saw players and support staff intervene on time and separate the duo before they could cross the lines as Maguire and Romero carried anger from their in-game confrontations to the closing moments of the marquee Europa League final. With the emotions running high already during the high-octane encounter, the two footballers had an intense argument and nearly tried to settle matters with a physical fight after the final whistle.
Maguire and Romero were involved in various tense moments in the game, frequently grappling during the corners and free-kicks. The duel was physical from the word go with the two only pushing each other harder in their moments of jostling as the match progressed. United’s decision to throw bodies with Maguire up front in a desperate move to force extra time also didn’t help. The England international collided with Romero and was handed a foul.
Hurt by the collision, Romero stayed down to earn precious seconds for Tottenham. Maguire then saw a yellow card raised for him by the referee, only fuelling the United defender’s frustration. He soon unleashed his wrath on Romero even as Spurs’ centre-back greeted one of the opposition players after his team’s win.
As the final whistle confirmed Tottenham’s third Europa League title in the competition’s history, Romero passed by Maguire and hugged United full-back Diogo Dalot. But just as he turned, he was confronted by an animated Maguire, who lashed out at the Spurs captain. The angry United player made various gestures referencing earlier incidents from the game, causing a near-fight between them. Romero and Maguire were separated by the players and backroom staff, ensuring no major escalation between the two furious individuals. There was much to rejoice later on for Romero and Tottenham as their victory ensured a place in next season’s Champions League.
