It might be a dream for many fans to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi play together for the same team. Raising their hopes, some media reports recently claimed that Messi and Ronaldo could unite to represent Inter Miami in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. It was said that the Portugal and Al Nassr superstar was keen to feature at the mega event, slated to be hosted in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025. Now, Fabrizio Romano, known for sharing major football updates, has shut all those rumours via a social media post.

“Reports of Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi to play together at Inter Miami for Club World Cup on short-term deal are wide of the mark. There’s absolutely nothing to those stories,” the Italian journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Inter Miami have already qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup. They sealed their spot in the 32-team competition after winning the MLS Supporters Shield last season. The Herons have been pooled in Group A alongside FC Porto, SE Palmeiras and Al Ahly FC. From the Saudi Pro League, Al Hilal is set to feature in the blockbuster event.

A few days ago, a report by TalkSport claimed that Ronaldo was interested in signing for a team that would compete at the FIFA World Cup. It led to the speculation of Inter Miami potentially offering a short-term deal to the Portuguese forward that would allow him to share the dressing room with Messi.

Ronaldo will become a free agent at the end of this season when his current Al Nassr contract expires. He currently earns £3.18 million per week at the Riyadh-based club. Inter Miami, co-owned by England legend David Beckham, might be able to afford his wages but Ronaldo is likely to extend his stay at Al Nassr for a few more seasons.

Ronaldo has featured in the Club World Cup four times, representing Manchester United and Real Madrid. He has registered seven goals and three assists in his eight appearances in the tournament and won the title in every edition.

Meanwhile, it will be the fourth appearance for Messi in the Club World Cup. As part of Barcelona, the eight-time Ballon d’Or triumphed at the event in 2010, 2012 and 2016. Messi has struck five goals and provided one assist in five matches.
