Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has said that critics should cut some slack to ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and it is not his mistake that India fail to win when he plays, adding that because he is so impactful that others pale in comparison to him, after India finished with a 2-2 scoreline in the five-Test series against England.
Bumrah featured in just three Tests during the England series, with reports indicating a knee injury that sidelined him for the final game.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Karthik came to Bumrah’s defence and emphasised his crucial role in the Indian cricket team.
“You have to look at it from Jasprit Bumrah’s point of view. I think that these kinds of wins, the way the series has panned out, the way the young team has fought, will help him in his career,” Karthik said.
“I believe Bumrah will be very proud of this young bowling attack and knowing him, he is not someone who shies away from pressure, big matches. Boss, he is in the ground, as a captain, any big moment, you go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a wicket, go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a 5-an over in a T20 match, you go to Jasprit Bumrah,” Karthik added.
“Now this stat of when he doesn’t play, India win. It’s not his mistake. He is so impactful that others pale in comparison at times, which is understandable. He is a world champion. It’s not easy and sometimes I feel we have to cut him some slack as well,” Karthik said.
Not just the former India cricketer, but batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has also said that India’s emerging victorious at Birmingham and the Oval in Bumrah’s absence was a matter of chance. He went on to highlight Bumrah’s performances in the three Tests he played.
“Bumrah started well, got five wickets in the first innings of the first Test. He did not play the second Test, but played in the third and the fourth. Again, in (one of) those two Tests, he got (a) five-wicket (haul),” Tendulkar said while speaking on Reddit.
