It’s that time of the year again when we’re about to lose an hour of sleep with Daylight Saving Time ready to kick off. With the dark winter days now near their conclusion, many in the US will see more hours of daylight in the evening due to the start of DST.

It is a practice of setting the clock forward an hour every spring, beginning this Sunday, March 9, and ending on the first Sunday in November. The official change is set to take place at 2 am on Sunday, affecting millions across the United States and Europe, and their daily routines and sleep schedules.

What Is Daylight Saving Time?

Practiced twice a year, daylight saving time (DST) is the period between March and November when US citizens adjust their clocks by one hour. While an hour is lost in March or the spring to make more daylight in the summer evenings, the clocks are set back one hour during the fall to add to the longer winter evenings.

The United States is set to observe DST on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 2 am, when clocks will move forward by an hour. This leads to extended daytime in the evening. It will be on November 2, 2025, making the clocks return to standard time. On the other hand, European countries will commence DST on Sunday, March 30, at 1 am and will conclude on October 26, 2025.

Daylight Saving Time: History And Significance

According to USA Today, the practice of pushing the clocks ahead of an hour started in 1918 during the World War I era but was repudiated in 1919 after farmers strongly rejected it. It was then re-established nationally early in World War II and was observed from February 9, 1942, to September 30, 1945.

Later, Daylight Saving Time was enacted as a legal requirement by the Uniform Time Act of 1966, mandating standard time within the existing time zones and establishing a permanent system of uniform DST.

With Americans now ready to adjust their clocks, marking the beginning of the warmer months, Kroger, the US supermarket giant, is offering free Kroger Hour Back Boxes with additional breakfast items to customers. According to the company’s statement, the limited-edition boxes will be stocked with their breakfast essentials, including coffee concentrate, oat milk creamer and frozen breakfast sandwiches. They will also offer a gift card with a special membership that includes free grocery delivery, fuel points and exclusive savings.

“Losing an hour of sleep during daylight savings can challenge parents and their family’s schedule. We created the Kroger Hour Back boxes to make daylight saving a little easier, helping parents and their families jump-start the day with customer-favorite, morning time foods—from a much-needed cup of coffee to a filling breakfast sandwich,” said Tom Duncan, Vice President, Head of Marketing at Kroger.

Customers can also claim one of thousands of free breakfast items during the offer period.
