After BJP’s decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, speculations are growing about the possibility of a woman Chief Minister leading the national capital.
BJP scored a thumping victory in the Delhi election with 48 out of 70 seats, ending the AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital. Sources said that the next Chief Minister will be from among the MLAs.
They added that the saffron party is looking to explore the option of appointing a Deputy Chief Minister from an under-represented background. The new cabinet could also witness a strong representation of women and Dalits, reported India Today.
4 Women BJP Candidates Who Won Delhi Polls:
- Rekha Gupta won in Shalimar Bagh with 68,200 votes, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes.
- Shikha Roy triumphed in Greater Kailash, securing 49,594 votes and defeating AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj by 3,188 votes.
- Poonam Sharma claimed the Wazirpur seat with 54,721 votes, defeating AAP’s Rajesh Gupta by 11,425 votes.
- Neelam Pehalwan secured the Najafgarh seat with 1,01,708 votes, defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar by 29,009 votes.
As the sources have suggested the next Chief Minister will be a female legislator from the newly elected MLAs, one of the four candidates mentioned above could be potentially appointed.
However, the party has not made any official announcement yet.
Big Booster To BJP’s Win
The BJP’s historic victory in the national capital after 27 years was further solidified by Parvesh Verma’s victory in the New Delhi constituency.
He defeated former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had held the seat since 2013. In the political landscape, the New Delhi seat result was seen as a symbolic end to AAP’s rising status in the capital city.
Verma also emerged as a potential candidate for the Chief Ministerial post, considering the strong results he delivered for the party in the Delhi elections. However, a decision has not been reached so far.
Notably, soon after BJP secured victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party president JP Nadda discussed the way forward.
On February 9, a day after the results were declared, Nadda met with Shah at his residence to talk about government formation.
As the Prime Minister is set to depart for his official foreign trip, BJP sources indicated that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister is likely to take place after his return.
It added that the party plans to hold a grand oath-taking event, with Chief Ministers from all NDA-ruled states expected to be invited.
