Dewald Brevis made his Test debut for South Africa on Saturday (June 28) against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and scored 51 runs from 41 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered three fours and three sixes and crossed the 50-run mark in just 38 balls by hitting Vincent Masekesa for a six on the last ball of the 19th over of South Africa’s first innings. By completing his half-century in 38 balls, Brevis broke the world record for scoring the fastest fifty on Test debut.
A total of two batters have crossed the 50-run mark in less than 38 balls in their first Test, but they achieved the feat in the second innings.
During the England-New Zealand Test played at McLean Park in Napier from March 22 to 26 in 2008, Tim Southee scored a 29-ball fifty for the Black Caps in the 2nd innings, and England batter Jacob Bethell crossed the 50-run mark in just 37 balls in the 2nd innings of the match played in Christchurch from November 28 to December 1, 2024, against New Zealand.
Brevis came out to bat at No. 6 for the Proteas team on Saturday and added 95 runs for the fifth wicket with Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is also making his Test debut for South Africa on Saturday.
The 19-year-old left-handed wicketkeeper-batter has scored a century for the Proteas in the first innings, and he crossed the 100-run mark in 112 balls.
He is the youngest South African batter to score a century on his Test debut.
