Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Friday stressed on the shared security priorities between India and the Maldives, when asked whether China featured in the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
Speaking at a special Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) briefing on the Prime Minister’s visit to the Maldives, Misri said that President Muizzu had reaffirmed his country’s commitment to national security and ongoing cooperation with India.
Misri did not mention China directly but said that India continues to work closely with the Maldives on any issue that could “impinge not just on our security, but the common security of the region.”
“The President expressed his commitment to the importance that the Maldives attaches to security-related issues and the commitment of both sides to continue working together,” Misri said.

“I think there is quite a high frequency of contact between the security authorities of the two countries and engagement at various levels,” he said. “This remains an important issue.”
Foreign Secretary also clarified that the two countries continue to work closely on any matters affecting shared security interests in the region. “We continue to work with the Maldives on any issue that might impinge upon shared security interests in the region,” Misri added.
His remarks followed a round of wide-ranging discussions in Male, where Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu focused on deepening cooperation in trade, defence, climate change, and infrastructure development.
During the visit, the two leaders jointly inaugurated several India-backed projects, including a new building for the Maldivian Ministry of Defence in Male, road and drainage works in Addu City, and 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale. PM Modi also handed over 72 vehicles and other equipment to the Maldives National Defence Force.
The visit also saw the signing of key agreements, including a Rs 4,850 crore Line of Credit, the launch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks, defence cooperation, and environmental partnerships.
Prime Minister Modi is currently on a two-day visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Muizzu, as the two nations look to strengthen ties following a period of diplomatic strain.
