What Is Liver Cancer?
Liver cancer refers to the development of malignant cells in the liver, which is a vital organ responsible for various essential functions such as detoxification and protein synthesis.
It is important to be aware of the precautions and symptoms associated with liver cancer to ensure early detection and treatment.
Types Of Liver Cancer:
- Hepatocellular carcinoma and bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) are the main types of adult primary liver cancer.
- Most adult primary liver cancers are hepatocellular carcinomas. This type of liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
Early Signs & Symptoms Of Liver Cancer
Symptoms of liver cancer can vary but often include unexpected weight loss, loss of appetite, upper abdominal pain, and jaundice. Early detection and prompt medical attention are crucial in managing this condition effectively.
- Unexplained bruising
- Extreme tiredness and fatigue
- High fever
- Hard bump or lump on the right side of your body just below your rib cage
- Itchy skin
- Loss of appetite which leads to unexplained weight loss
- Pain in the upper abdomen
- Swollen abdomen
- Discomfort in the upper abdomen on the right side
Treatment Of Liver Cancer
Liver cancer treatment options vary depending on the stage and location of the cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health.
Treatment Options:
Surgery:
Partial hepatectomy: Removal of the cancerous part of the liver.
Liver transplant: Replacement of the diseased liver with a healthy donor liver.
Ablation Therapy:
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): Using heat to destroy the tumor.
Microwave ablation: Similar to RFA, using microwaves to destroy the tumor.
Cryoablation: Using extreme cold to freeze and destroy the tumor.
Targeted Therapy:
Kinase inhibitors: Block specific proteins involved in cancer growth.
Monoclonal antibodies: Target specific molecules on cancer cells.
Immunotherapy:
Atezolizumab/Bevacizumab: A combination of drugs that boost the body’s immune response against cancer cells.
Chemotherapy:
Systemic chemotherapy: Using drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body.
Hepatic artery infusion (HAI): Delivers chemotherapy directly to the liver via a catheter.
Radiation Therapy:
Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT): Delivers radiation directly to the tumor using tiny radioactive beads.
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT): Delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor from outside the body.
Other Considerations:
Surveillance: Monitoring for small tumors that may not require immediate treatment.
Clinical Trials: Participation in clinical trials may offer access to new and experimental treatments.
