President Donald Trump has expressed his backing for congressional efforts to place the District of Columbia back under direct federal control. During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, Trump cited concerns about crime and homelessness in the nation’s capital as reasons for his support.

Trump emphasized the need to enhance safety in Washington, D.C., stating, ‘I think we should take over Washington, D.C. — make it safe.’ He further suggested that the federal government should govern the District of Columbia.

Currently, Congress has the authority to review and overturn D.C. laws under the city’s Home Rule provision. However, some Republican lawmakers are advocating for a more extensive intervention that would diminish the city’s autonomy and return it to direct federal oversight.

While expressing personal regard for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Trump criticized the city’s governance, asserting that the current administration is failing to address issues such as crime and homelessness. He specifically mentioned the presence of tents on public lawns as a concern, stating, ‘Too much crime, too many tents on the lawns — these magnificent lawns.’

Trump highlighted the impact of homelessness on the city’s image, particularly when hosting foreign dignitaries. He emphasized the need to maintain the aesthetic appeal of Washington, D.C., remarking, ‘You just can’t let that happen. You can’t have tents on all your beautiful — your once magnificent plaza and lawns.’
