Electricity Bills To Get Cheaper In Maharashtra
Maharashtra Govt To Cut Power Tariffs: Electricity consumers in Maharashtra have reason to cheer. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government will reduce power tariffs by 26 per cent over the next five years, according to a report by PTI.
In a post shared on June 25 via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Fadnavis said the tariff cut will begin with an initial 10 per cent reduction in the first year, marking a first in Maharashtra’s history. Notably, Fadnavis also serves as the state’s Energy Minister.
What the CM Said About the Tariff Cut
“For the first time in the history of the state, electricity rates will be reduced by 10 per cent in the first year and 26 per cent in five years in phases,” Fadnavis stated on X.
He thanked the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for approving the tariff reduction petition submitted by state-run power distributor Mahavitaran.
Details of MERC’s Power Tariff Order
According to Fadnavis, Mahavitaran’s petition seeking a tariff reduction was accepted by MERC—an unprecedented move in the state’s power sector. The tariff cut will benefit all three consumer categories: domestic, commercial, and industrial.
He further stated that 70 per cent of consumers using less than 100 units of electricity monthly will receive the maximum rate reduction of 10 per cent.
Support for Farmers and Focus on Green Energy
Fadnavis added that the government is accelerating efforts under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 to ensure a reliable daytime electricity supply for farmers.
In addition, he emphasized the state’s push for green energy in future power purchase agreements, which is expected to bring significant cost savings in electricity procurement.
Update on Vadhavan Port
In a related development, Fadnavis provided an update on infrastructure, highlighting progress on the Vadhavan Port project. “We are building Vadhavan Port, which will be three times larger than the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority—the country’s largest port handling 60 per cent of India’s container traffic,” he said. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for the project, positioning Maharashtra as a major hub for industry and logistics in India.
