Elon Musk-owned AI startup is bringing new features to the Grok AI chatbot. Grok will now come with picture-understanding capabilities, that is, the in-house AI chatbot will be able to process and assess the contents of images. Now, users can upload an image and use it to ask their AI questions. The Grok-2 AI model was made public by xAI in August.

At the time, the company declared that several modalities would soon be supported by the AI model. The official Grok account revealed the AI chatbot’s new image comprehension feature in a post on X. An AI system can see and analyse visual information included in an image or video with image understanding, commonly referred to as computer vision. This feature is currently limited to static images.

Musk also wrote about the new functionality, emphasising that the AI chatbot can analyse the image in greater detail and even interpret visual jokes. As an illustration, Musk requested Grok to describe a joke in a picture. The basis of the joke, its twist, and its visual gag were all explained by the AI.

Computer vision, however, is not a novel characteristic of AI systems. Practically, all of the key models, such as Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude and others, have this capability. This was brought to light by an X user, who expressed concern that Grok still lacks a number of essential functionalities.

The AI chatbot cannot currently upload files and create images, according to a user who commented on Musk’s tweet. “Not for long. We are getting done in months what took everyone else years,” Musk replied, thus reflecting that Grok might get these features in the future.

xAI launched the Grok-2 and Grok-2 Mini AI models in August this year as an update to the large language model (LLM) pilot. Both variants are accessible to X Premium and X Premium+ members through the Grok chatbot. According to the company, it fared better than the GPT-4 Turbo AI model and the Claude 2.5 Sonnet model.
