Britain’s Emma Raducanu will miss next week’s Berlin Open due to a back problem as she prepares for the upcoming Wimbledon.
Ranked 37th, Raducanu has been dealing with this back issue since before last month’s French Open.
Chinese top seed Zheng Qinwen defeated Raducanu in straight sets and will face US eighth seed Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals on Saturday.
Zheng, along with Keys and Maria, advanced to the last four by breaking the 2021 US Open champion Raducanu twice in the first set and stopping her mini comeback in the second.
World number 37 Raducanu led 3-0 in the second set with two breaks of serve but then suffered three breaks herself, leading to her exit. She took an off-court medical timeout during her quarterfinal loss at Queen’s Club on Friday.
Afterward, the 22-year-old Raducanu said she needs rest. “I’m not overly concerned that it’s something serious,” the 2021 US Open champion said, “but I know it’s something very annoying and needs proper and careful management.”
Nine of the top 10 women’s players are set to compete in Berlin, a grass-court event used to prepare for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30, with a record prize money purse up for grabs.
