Emory University active shooter rains bullets near CDC building as students are told to hide: Live updates

An active shooter opened fire at Emory College on Friday afternoon – raining bullets near students’ apartments in Atlanta, Georgia.

Terrified locals were told to ‘RUN, HIDE, FIGHT’ after a gunman shot out near multiple buildings in the vicinity – including at a nearby CVS pharmacy at Emory Point. 

Bullets shot by the suspect shattered windows at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) headquarters, which is located near Emory College.

The shooter’s identity and their target is currently unclear.

One police officer was shot and taken to a local hospital. 

Dozens of police vehicles swarmed the college campus on Friday afternoon. Emory University and Emory University Hospital have been placed on lockdown.

Georgia’s Attorney General Chris Carr posted on X: ‘We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community.’

Active shooter reported at Emory University in Atlanta

An active shooter is on the loose at Emory College in Atlanta.

College students at Emory in Georgia, were told to run, hide, or fight following the terrifying shooter alert.

Multiple gunshots were reported near students’ apartments. A student at their apartment near the campus recorded a video where gunshots were audible.

An alert from the university went out at around 4pm advising students of the shooter and telling them to avoid the CVS on campus where the suspect was.

White House ‘monitoring’ situation

A White House source told NewsNation that the Trump administration is ‘monitoring’ the shooting at Emory.

The president hasn’t yet publicly addressed the active shooter investigation. Details surrounding the shooting are still unclear.

Police warns to stay away from area

The Atlanta Police Department has shared on X that the shooting is still active and to avoid the area around

‘Everybody screaming that there’s an active shooter’

Randy Gold recalled the harrowing moment he saw people running from Emory University as he left the nearby hospital.

‘We were actually exiting the hospital. My father was just discharged so we were rolling out of the elevator in a wheelchair,’ Gold told CNN.

‘As soon as we turned towards the exit, people were running toward us, doctors, nurses, the valet parkers, everybody screaming that there’s an active shooter.’

Gold said he and his father hid in the first office they could find and are sheltering at the University of Emory Hospital.

The hospital is currently under lockdown.

Shelter-in-place continues

Emory’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response has notified students to continue sheltering in place while police remain on the scene.

Georgia attorney general speaks out

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr issued a message on X that his office was ‘horrified’ by the news of the shooting.

Georgia representative sends message to students

Georgia Representative Mike Collins told students at Emory to ‘take cover’ amid the active shooter threat.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that the area was an active scene and to avoid the area.

Authorities said they will provide updates as they are confirmed.

Nearby businesses hunker down

Brandy Giraldo, the general manager of a local deli, told the Associated Press that the staff hunkered down inside when they were notified about the shooting.

Giraldo said employees heard a string of gunshots. ‘It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other,’ she added.

Atlanta Police are on the scene responding to the shooting.

FBI assisting with Emory University ongoing active shooter incident

FBI agents are being sent in to assist local law enforcement with the onogoing active shooter situation at Emory University, a spokesperson confirmed.

Officer injured en route

A DeKalb County police officer was injured en route to a local hospital, DeKalb County communications director Dionna Smith told NBC News.

It wasn’t immediately clear who the officer was or the extent of their injuries.

Shelter-in-place order announced

Emory’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response issued a shelter-in-place order for students on campus.

Emergency services on campus

Posts shared on social media depicted a large police and emergency services presence blocking the roads near campus.

It’s unclear if there have been any victims and if the shooter remains at large.

Emory University campus less than a mile from CDC headquarters in Atlanta

Emory University is located minutes away from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

No motive or location targets were made immediately clear to authorities.
