End Of Gmail? Google’s AI Chief Demis Wants To Change The Way People Manage Emails

Last Updated:

Gmail is easy to use but the clutter of emails need a new system to help us manage the important and spam content in our inbox and Google feels AI is the answer.

Google’s AI chief is bothered by the email clutter and wants AI to solve the problem.

Gmail is the go-to choice for millions to get their emails, offers and other product-related stuff. But Google is already looking at ways to reduce the clutter around its mailing client and AI is probably going to be the answer to its problems. Google DeepMind chief, Demis Hassabis realises the pain points of daily users and claims they are working behind the scenes to give us a system that enables AI to manage your emails and maybe even smartly reply to them.

Hassabis was speaking at an event in London recently, where he shared some nuggets on how the new AI system will look to simplify the process which also hints at less use of Gmail in many ways.

End Of Gmail, Not Really

“The thing I really want, and we’re working on, is can we have a next-generation email, ” Hassabis was quoted saying on the sidelines of the event. He even talks about getting rid of emails and would be willing to pay big money to make that happen.

Some of you might know that Gmail also has added an AI layer with the help of summaries, smart replies and more. But going by Hassabis’ statement, the company could have something different and smarter being developed behind the scenes and we could see it roll out in the near future.

The New AI Supermail

While the Google AI chief does not reveal the exact plans he gives us a blueprint of how this AI-powered system will change the dynamics of managing emails. He claims the new model will focus on understanding your patterns and respond to them in a personalised way.

They even want to make it easier to reply to most mails and let people focus on the content that needs their immediate attention. Google has been able to bring some level of AI into its current systems, but there is a scope for a new model to help people declutter their mailing experience.

The AI system promises to go through your mails (privacy concerns?) and make sure you don’t miss the important ones. And when Hassabis talks about paying money to get these features, you can be rest assured that an AI supermail will not come cheap, in fact could have a fee to keep the data centres running.
