Another day, another Manchester United man left disappointed. Well, dismissed in this case.
Championship club Middlesbrough sacked manager Michael Carrick on Wednesday after they failed to secure a play-off spot for the 2024/25 season.
Carrick, a former Manchester United and England midfielder who had a stint as a caretaker manager at Old Trafford, had been leading Boro since October 2022.
The 43-year-old led Middlesbrough to the Championship play-offs in the 2022/23 season, but the team has missed the top six in the last two campaigns.
“Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick,” the club announced in a statement.
Carrick’s assistants, Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick, have also left the club.
“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the best for the future.”
Carrick started his coaching career with Manchester United, with whom he won five Premier League titles in his playing days, after retiring in 2018.
He had a spell as a caretaker in charge of the team in November 2021 after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but left when Ralf Rangnick was appointed in December.
Boro turned to him in October the following year after a disastrous start to the season saw them sack Chris Wilder with the club in the relegation zone.
Carrick immediately turned their fortunes around as they flew up the table and into promotion contention.
They ultimately finished fourth for a first play-off campaign in five years but were beaten by Coventry in the semi-finals.
Boro then fell just short of another Premier League push in the following season, as they finished eighth, four points off sixth.
This past season, Middlesbrough won just one of their final six league games, finishing 10th in the Championship table, four points shy of the play-off spots.
