EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: The colourful history of Adele’s ‘haunted’ mansion

Between warbles, Adele, who has been accused of blighting the sale of a West Sussex mansion by claiming it is haunted, has now learned the truth about its colourful past.

She moved into Lock House in 2012 but soon left, claiming it was ‘too scary’.

Film-maker Mark Ezra (Waking Ned) reveals his grandfather bought the house and 1,000 acres in 1919 and settled down to the life of a country gentleman.

‘Things started to go wrong when he received a “gypsy curse” after an altercation with local Travellers,’ says Mark.

‘When his wife, my grandmother, died in 1939, he sold up.’ Perhaps Adele’s “ghost” is simply a continuation of that curse.’

Deep waters.

Does recently departed cabinet secretary Simon Case understand how the constitution works?

Praising Donald Trump’s use of hundreds of executive orders to get his own way, he suggests it’s time Keir Starmer did the same.

Case seems to forget that Trump is head of state but the British PM isn’t.

The King’s signature carries power, not Sir Keir’s.

You would think Case, who also worked for Prince William, would know that. Unless he’s proposing a coup.

Victoria Coren Mitchell confesses to hoodwinking contestants on Only Connect.

‘For the first 19 weeks of a series a few years ago, I claimed to be writing a murder mystery novel because I was jealous of my friend and fellow quiz host Richard Osman’s success [as a crime writer],’ admits Victoria.

Eventually, she announced that her publishers had postponed her whodunnit until coverage of a real-life murder had ‘blown over’.

‘My opening remarks are broadly intended as a decade-long satirical comment on the nonsense people spout at the beginning of programmes,’ she explains.

That’s all right then!

Joining in the online hostilities between Piers Morgan and Hugh Grant over Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, John Cleese grandly announces: ‘Hugh and I choose not to work for him [Murdoch].’

Piers fires back: ‘Hi John, I’m bemused. You say you’ve chosen not to work for Murdoch yet you starred in The Day The Earth Stood Still in 2008 which was produced by 20th Century Fox, owned at the time by… Murdoch. Were you being lazy, sloppy, or just a lying hypocrite?’

Bong! Seconds out. Round two.

Like President Trump, the late Queen took an early interest in Panama, making the first state visit of her reign there in 1953.

US troops gave her a guard of honour as she drove through town with a beaming President Jose Remon Cantera.

A fan of the turf, just like the Queen, he was on a racecourse when he was assassinated two years later.

Is the Royal Navy wise to change the name of submarine HMS Agincourt to HMS Achilles ‘to avoid annoying the French’?

With the Greeks agitating for the Elgin Marbles to be returned, might they want the hero of Troy’s name back as well?
