YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to ensure that southern states are not subjected to injustice during the delimitation exercise scheduled for 2026.
Reddy highlighted that the population in southern states has significantly decreased over the past 15 years, largely due to the Union government’s push for population control.
“An analysis of the 2011 census data reveals that population growth and its projections have not been uniform across states. Between 1971 and 2011, the share of southern states in the country’s total population declined. We believe this share has decreased even further over the past 15 years,” he said.
Reddy expressed concern that if the delimitation is conducted solely based on population figures, the number of constituencies in these states could be reduced, weakening their representation in Parliament.
“There is mounting concern in the southern states that if the delimitation process is carried out based on current population data, their share of parliamentary representation will undoubtedly decline. I urge you to ensure that population figures are not the sole criterion for this exercise,” he wrote.
Further, he emphasised the need for equitable representation for all states in the policy-making process of Parliament.
“Only through fair participation can every state play an active role in shaping national policies. The upcoming delimitation must ensure that no state loses its representation in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha,” he added.
The letter comes at a time when the delimitation process has sparked a political standoff between the ruling BJP at the Centre and the DMK government in Tamil Nadu. In response to these developments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has scheduled an all-party meeting on Saturday to discuss the issue.
Following Reddy’s instructions, YSRCP parliamentary leader YV Subba Reddy has also shared the contents of the letter with the DMK, signalling a united front among southern parties on the matter.
