Chennai Super Kings are the joint-most successful team in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. But in the ongoing season of the cash-rich league, the MS Dhoni-led side is horribly out of form. The Chennai-based franchise, after kicking off the IPL 2025 season with a 4-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians in Chennai on March 23, has lost five matches in a row. Their latest defeat came against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday (April 11).
In the match played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, after being invited to bat first, CSK could only manage to score 103 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs and then let KKR chase down the target of 104 runs in just 10.1 overs for the loss of two wickets.
The eight-wicket defeat on Friday was CSK’s fifth loss in a row this season, and with a total of two points from six matches, they sit at the No. 9 position in the IPL 2025 points table.
The defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders has now put CSK’s chances of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs in danger now. The Chennai-based franchise has eight league matches more to play, and they can’t afford to lose more than a couple of matches now.
In the past IPL seasons, teams with 14 points have managed to qualify for the playoffs, but it’s not always a guarantee, and who knows it better than CSK, which, despite securing 14 points last season, had to miss out on a place in the playoffs due to an inferior net run rate compared to Royal Challengers Bengaluru?
For CSK to keep their chances of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs alive, MS Dhoni’s men have to win at least seven out of the remaining eight matches. If they manage to do so, then with 16 points, CSK can finish in the top four positions. CSK will stand a chance to finish in the top two if they win all eight remaining matches.
CSK’s upcoming matches
In their seventh league match of IPL 2025, CSK will face Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium on April 14, and then they will take on arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 20. CSK’s ninth and tenth league matches are against SRH and Punjab Kings at Chepauk Stadium.
Chennai will face RCB in the away fixture on May 3, KKR at Eden Gardens on May 7, Rajasthan Royals at Chepauk on May 12 and Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 18.
